Using the Sidebar from a Local Folder
This sidebar is coded entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, meaning that it can be run from a local folder if desired. Here are the steps to ensure that your local copy works correctly.
- Save the sidebar.zip from http://www.jtopia.org/sidebar/sidebar.zip
- Unzip the file to the desired directory
- I suggest unzipping to the desktop
- If using WinRAR or WinZip (possibly others as well), when extracting, just extract, do not "Extract to sidebar/", it will create the sidebar folder on it's own.
- Launch the 'index.html' file from the Sidebar folder, then click Open Sidebar
- When looking at the index.html page, you can save the site as a favorite, and then you'll be able to launch the sidebar with just a couple of clicks.
- Don't delete the sidebar folder, it is needed
Tips & Tricks
- The sidebar uses Cookies. It will save whatever is in the text fields when closed, but will only repopulate them when the sidebar is opened from the same location. (i.e.: if you close the networked copy, then open your local copy, the notes will not populate. When you reopen the networked version, you will see your text again) If you delete your cookies, you will be deleting any saved text for all versions.
- You may need to add http://localhost/ to your trusted sites. (<-Not 100% sure about this, was needed for flash functionality, but since that has been removed......)
- If you'd like to change the links in the Quick Links dropdown at the bottom of the toolbar, you will need to edit the sb.html in notepad (or other editor of your choice). If you do a Ctrl+F (find) and type "Quick Links" in the search, it will take you to the location where those links can be edited. Just match formatting, and it will work fine. !!LOCAL COPY ONLY!!
